Description
This rotary encoder is a high-quality 24-pulse encoder with detents and a smooth feel. It is panel mountable, or can be plugged into a breadboard by cutting or bending the two mechanical side tabs. Included is a soft-touch knob with an arrow that fits perfectly and looks great.
The encoder features a built-in push-button switch activated by pressing the knob. One side has a 3-pin connector (ground and two coding pins), and the other side has two pins for a normally open switch.
Rotary encoders are used as rotation sensors or selectors, resembling potentiometers but functioning differently. They rotate continuously with 24 segments, each providing a clicky feel as they move clockwise or counter-clockwise, causing the two switches to open and close. The current position cannot be determined directly; a microcontroller must count the clicks to track rotation. For fixed position detection, a potentiometer is a better choice.
