Introduction to Linux

An operating system acts as an interface between software and hardware of a computer or in simple words manages communication between hardware and software. It provides a platform for computer programming and without this system’s function won’t be working. The objective includes making our computer system convenient to use in an efficient manner.

Why Linux?

Linux is one of the other operating systems people been using since the early 90s.

You can find Linux in every electronic device like in your desktops, smartphones, home appliances, cars and many more. Across the globe people still find Linux a reliable, trustworthy, secure and easy operating system. But the question arises why Linux? There are numbers of operating systems like Windows XP, Windows 8, Windows 7, macOS, etc. What makes Linux different from others?

And why should everyone learn Linux? Other operating systems work fine with our desktops and systems, then why there is any requirement of working with a completely different environment. One of the important points which should be considered before considering an operating system is its security or how much secure it is from viruses, malware, slowdown attacks, hacks, etc. Unlike Windows, it is not vulnerable which makes it much more secure. If it is safe from viruses and other attacks then there is also no need for expensive antiviruses. This saves your share of money spending on premium Antiviruses and also makes the security system easier to work on.

Linux is one of the few OS that supports many languages like C, C++, Python, Ruby, Java, Perl, etc. Moreover, it offers a massive variety of applications helpful for programming functions.

Linux is entirely free to use. You can take the entry for free. Install it in as many computers as you can without spending a rupee for software or for the license.

Windows demands lots of your information before handing you the software. For this Windows also faced criticism. In distinction, Linux distributors don’t collect any of your information. Also not need of any extra shield for privacy.

Linux has a number of varieties to choose from which suits your system. You will have completely different plans & packages that differ in licensing terms, the amount of activation, prepacked options, and price. Almost every distribution of Linux can be downloaded for nothing, burned onto disk, and installed. The most popular Linux distributions are :

  1. Fedora
  2. Debian
  3. Ubuntu Linux
  4. Linux Mint
  5. Arch Linux
  6. Deepin
  7. openSUSE

In Linux, you will not encounter with big software updates, but there are a lot of quicker software system updates.

Linux is also distributed under an open-source license. Open source follows the following key philosophies:

  1. The freedom to run the code, for any purpose.
  2. The freedom to study how the program works, and change it according to you.
  3. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others
  4. The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to other people.

Anybody can learn Linux as it requires less programming information. A great many people learn Linux through the web, you can take in the directions from your cell phones or computer. Regardless of whether you know it or not you are now using Linux consistently. Each time you use Google or Facebook or some other significant Internet website, you are communicating with servers running Linux. Most DVRs, planes and vehicles and ongoing TVs keep running on Linux.

Whether you are already an experienced system administrator or a beginner, you will benefit from learning things like

  1. How to install Linux on a computer
  2. The most effective method to solve the mysteries of the command line and use bash scripting to accomplish many tasks efficiently and consistently
  3. How to maintain and customize your Linux Desktop
  4. How to tighten your Linux installation to make it more secure

Conclusion

Linux is a family of open-source operating systems. Linux has a variety of distributions available which are good as per the use case of users. Linux is getting popularisation because of its Open source nature, which allows its users to develop and deploy their own Linux based distributions and software.

The developments in Linux are made by Linux community which means anyone can contribute there programming skills irrespective of their degrees and grades, which makes Linux unique. Linux users will keep growing with the technological advancements going around.

There are also a lot of things which have Linux “under the hood”. Android, for instance, is developed from Linux. My modem/router has Linux at it’s heart. While the MacOS developed from a different start, like Linux it has its roots in Unix, many of the basic concepts persist from 1969. Some elements were copied by almost everyone.
