Description
For projects that need a rotary encoder but require a single-sided design or need to avoid interrupting traces or devices on the other side, the Surface Mount Rotary Encoder EC11J is an excellent choice. This high-quality 30-detents encoder from Alps features a smooth bushing suitable for mounting in an enclosure.
The encoder includes a built-in push-button allowing the knob to be pressed to close a separate switch. It features a 3-pad connector (ground and two coding pins) on one side and two pads for a normally open switch on the other. The encoder also has 6 large mechanical pads for a robust physical connection, recommended to be used with a ground plane for mechanical stability.
Unlike potentiometers, this rotary encoder rotates continuously with 30 distinct segments, each providing a tactile 'click'. Movement clockwise or counter-clockwise changes the two switches' states, enabling microcontrollers to count rotation increments. The current position is not directly readable; thus, microcontroller tracking is necessary. For absolute position detection, consider using a potentiometer instead.
