Description

Rotary encoders are incredibly fun and versatile input devices offering endless rotation with tactile detents, unlike potentiometers. This Adafruit I2C Stemma QT Rotary Encoder Breakout board simplifies the use of rotary encoders by integrating a microcontroller with seesaw firmware that handles pulses, pins, and stores the incremental value accessible over I2C.

This version comes as a breakout board only, without the rotary encoder soldered on. You can solder on any standard PEC11-pinout rotary encoder with or without a push-switch to customize your project. If you want a version with a pre-soldered encoder, please see product 5880.

Key features include:

  • Easy I2C communication with any microcontroller from Arduino UNO to Raspberry Pi
  • Built-in onboard microcontroller with seesaw firmware for tracking rotary encoder input
  • NeoPixel onboard LED controllable over I2C for customizable visual feedback
  • INT pin configures to pulse low on rotation or push-button activation
  • Three address jumpers allow up to 8 boards on the same I2C bus
  • Compact 1" x 1" size with rotary encoder footprint rotated 45 degrees
  • STEMMA QT connectors for solderless Qwiic compatible connections

The breakout is powered by 3 to 5V DC and supports either 3 or 5V logic I2C. Each board ships assembled and tested with a small piece of header included for breadboarding.

For ease of use, Adafruit provides Arduino and CircuitPython libraries. Please note this board is designed for hand-rotated mechanical encoders, not high-speed motor encoders.

Product specifications:

  • Default I2C address: 0x36 (range 0x36 to 0x3D with address jumpers)
  • Product dimensions: 25.6mm x 25.3mm x 4.6mm (1.0" x 1.0" x 0.2")
  • Product weight: 2.4g (0.1oz)

Note: This board does not include the rotary encoder component; you must solder it yourself.
