Description

The Adafruit PCM5122 I2S DAC is a powerful and easy-to-use digital-to-analog converter for converting digital I2S audio from devices like ESP32, RP2350, or Raspberry Pi into high-quality stereo audio. This DAC features excellent audio specs with 112 dB signal-to-noise ratio and -93 dB total harmonic distortion.

The breakout board requires no MCLK signal or I2C configuration by default, enabling plug and play with I2S audio input. For advanced configurations such as volume control, mute, EQ, and filters, the chip supports I2C or SPI interfaces via two MODE pins. The device supports multiple audio formats and bit widths, and the audio output is via a 3.5mm jack or breakout pads for direct wiring.

Key features and capabilities include:

  • High performance PCM5122 chip supporting up to 384 kHz sampling rate
  • Simple hardware mode with optional software configuration through I2C or SPI
  • Integrated audio processing functions like dynamic range control, equalization, and filtering
  • Automatic internal generation of MCLK signal
  • Line-level stereo output (not suitable for driving headphones directly)
  • 3.3V logic inputs and support for 3-5V power supply
  • Configurable gain and mute options via pins or registers

Each order includes one PCM5122 DAC breakout board and headers for soldering to breadboards.

Technical Specifications:

  • Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) / Dynamic Range: 112 dB
  • Total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) @ -1 dBFS: -93 dB
  • Compatible audio data formats: I2S, Left-Justified, Right-Justified, TDM/DSP
  • Accepts 16, 20, 24, and 32-bit audio data
