Description
If you want to interface with telco, retro, or industrial equipment, the Adafruit RS-232 Full Pinout Breakout with 8 Channels of UART to RS-232 Level Shifters is your friend in such cases. It provides 5 input and 3 output channels of level shifting and manages high/negative voltage generation all in a low-cost breakout board using the classic MAX3243 chip from TI.
This version has a DE-9 Female socket connector soldered in, suitable for devices or cables requiring a female connector.
RS-232 is a legacy serial communication standard, historically used for mice, modems, barcode scanners, teletypes, and other industrial equipment. Many devices still use RS-232 ports today. This breakout runs on 3.3V power and logic and handles all 8 data pins enabling full use of flow control signals such as RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, and RI.
The breakout includes two additional lines 'Valid' and 'Off': the Valid output goes high when the chip detects signal voltages, indicating a connection, while the Off pin can tri-state all pins to reduce power consumption.
The product comes fully assembled with UART low-voltage side and DE-9F RS-232 high-voltage side, and includes headers for soldering to breadboards.
