Description

Analog switches are a solid state alternative to relays, providing a smaller, lower-power technology that won't wear out mechanically. The Adafruit STEMMA Analog SPDT Switch features the MAX4544 SPDT analog switch for signals up to 12V, designed for easy use without soldering.

When the selection signal is low, the Common pin connects to the Normally Closed (NC) pin and disconnects from the Normally Open (NO) pin. When the selection signal is high, the Common pin connects to NO and disconnects from NC. The switch time is near instant (~30ns) and ensures break-before-make to avoid accidental cross-connection of NC and NO pins.

Important usage notes:

  • The V+ power pin (red wire in STEMMA cable) must be as high as the highest analog voltages you want to switch (up to 12V). It cannot be powered at 3.3V to switch 12V signals.
  • The MAX4544 cannot switch signals below ground; negative voltages cannot be applied to COM/NO/NC pins.
  • Designed for analog signals, not power. It can only source or sink a few mA of current.

This breakout board includes a JST PH (2mm pitch) input connector for plug-and-play use, with a terminal block for common, Normally Open, and Normally Closed signals. Signal and power pins are also available on a 0.1" breakout header.
